Are you staycationing this holiday season but still want a bit of adventure? Assemble your family, friends, and/or co-workers and consider solving an escape room!
Escape rooms are immersive, interactive puzzles that you have sixty minutes to solve by finding clues within the room. Rooms are themed and have varying levels of difficulty. No matter how challenging, escape rooms are for everyone and provide many benefits that can help you.
4 Benefits of Playing an Escape Room
1. Celebrate your differences.
Great news! Escape rooms have nothing to do with how intelligent you are. Rooms feature a variety of puzzles that involve logic, observation, and memory. The more diverse learning styles your group has, the more successful your group will be. When it comes to escape rooms, it is your team’s differences that are the real key to success.
2. Strengthen your communication skills.
It is essential to work together in an escape room. Ensuring everyone in your group has an equal voice can make or break your group’s chances of success. While the concrete-sequential thinkers may latch onto a logic puzzle, the observational learners may have noticed a color pattern or hidden lock that will be critical for the group to use to escape. The more your group talks to each other and establishes a successful communication system, the faster you will progress.
3. Bond with family or co-workers.
Escape rooms provide a structured, goal-oriented activity that can bring you closer together with others, without having to worry about lengthy silences. You may even discover you have similar problem-solving skills or other commonalities with your group that never would have come up if you hadn’t tried to solve an escape room together.
4. Feel a sense of accomplishment.
Escape rooms can help boost self-esteem and self-confidence for everyone participating. Feel a rush of adrenaline while you help your group solve challenging puzzles. High-five your friends when you manage to deactivate a self-destruct switch with two seconds left on the clock. Playing an escape room is an easy way to remind yourself of your talents and problem-solving abilities, while strengthening your connections with others.
If you’re searching for an activity the whole family can safely enjoy this holiday season, or are simply looking for an alternative to the company’s annual corporate party, book an adventure with your local escape room.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About New England PIRATE John Quelch!
Ahoy, mateys! Monkey Mind Escape Rooms is excited to have a new pirate themed adventure: The Legend of the Shoals. While we, the staff, walk around treating every day like it’s International Talk Like A Pirate Day and try to insert “swashbuckle”, “hornswaggle”, and “avast ye scallywags!” into casual conversation, we thought we’d share the fun by introducing you to the real life pirate arrrrr room is inspired by: Captain John Quelch.
Whether you’ve heard of him or not, here are a few facts you may not know:
1. Mutiny! John Quelch was voted captain of the Charles (a New England ship) after he participated in a mutiny of previous Captain Daniel Plowman. Quelch was Plowman’s lieutenant. And that, friends, is why you always tip your waitstaff.
2. Permission to steal?! Back in the day (early 1700’s), it was a common practice for government officials to issue privateering “licenses”, AKA: permission to steal. This was the government’s way of saying, “Stealing is bad, unless you’re stealing for the government, on water!” Governor Joseph Dudley of Boston hired the crew of the Charles to plunder and pillage French and Spanish ships off the coast of Arcadia and Newfoundland to bring back riches for New England.
3. Treasure! Legend has it Quelch’s crew buried some of their stolen gold on Star Island off the coast of Portsmouth New Hampshire. In the early 1800s, some of the gold coins were found hidden in the stone walls. Maybe some are left?!
4. Murder. Captain John Quelch has the historical distinction no one ever wanted: He was the first person in the United States to die by judicial murder. After a lucrative one (yes, ONE) year career of scallywagging and skullduggery, John Quelch was convicted of piracy in 1704, without a jury. Apparently New England’s government decided they weren’t getting enough of his plunder, so it was time for him to walk the…too soon?
5. Controversy. Legend has it, as John Quelch stood on the gallows, right before he was hung he made a speech to the crowd, telling them he had first been asked to steal for New England and now he was being hung for it. Then, he took off his hat and bowed.
We hope they applauded.
Thanks for learning more about Captain John Quelch! Come check out the legend in action at our newest escape room The Legend of the Shoals at Monkey Mind Escape Rooms, 10 Vaughan Mall, Suite 214, Portsmouth NH 03801. Book your adventure here.
[PORTSMOUTH, NH, February 1, 2021] We know that times have changed. We are all looking for safe and fun activities to do with our families and COVID “pod”. Here in New Hampshire, escape rooms offer up that exciting alternative to another online movie; that finally-get-out-of-house-to-somewhere-other-than-the-grocery-store option; that stimulating environment to challenge your mind with brain teasers and laughs.
An escape room is an immersive, themed room where teams of two or more players work together to search for clues, solve riddles and puzzles and open locks… all to achieve the goal of ‘escaping the room’ within 60 minutes.
Did you know that there are escape rooms all across the Granite State? Each New Hampshire escape room is a small business, individually owned and operated. We live and play in the communities we serve, so the desire to keep our guests safe and healthy continues to be a personal goal. While cleanliness has always been a priority, New Hampshire escape rooms have taken the extra steps necessary to not only meet recommendations and mandates, but to surpass our guests’ expectations of providing the best experience possible. Hand sanitizer, mask requirements, social distancing, between-game disinfecting, private rooms, and online ordering are just a few of the safety precautions adopted by all New Hampshire escape rooms. Some New Hampshire escape rooms go beyond requirements and even have air filtration systems, capacity reduction and state of the art sanitization.
When planning your winter staycation, check out a local escape room for the best hour of your week!
